Carrollton,
TX, April 2000 - Nissan Marine is
proud to be a sponsor of Alder Allensworth’s “Passion for Life”
sailing expedition.
Alder was diagnosed with Adno Cystic Carcinoma of the lacrimal
gland in June, 1990. She was only the 80th documented case in
the world and was given a less than 10% chance of surviving the
cancer. Alder underwent radical surgery in which her left eye,
eyesocket, muscles, lacrimal gland, and optic nerve were
removed. Alder is the only known survivor of this form of
cancer.
Refusing to give
up, Alder joined Sailing Alternatives, Inc. (SAlt)., a
non-profit organization founded in 1993 to assist the disabled
through the art and science of sailing. SAlt (www.sailingalternatives.org)
uses sailing as a tool to increase self-reliance, provide a new
measure of self worth, develop independence and establish
community between the disabled and able-bodied.

To promote her “passion for life” and to commemorate her 10th
year of being cancer free, Alder, on April 11, 2000 embarked on an
extraordinary expedition. Her goal, to single-handedly sail 2000
miles starting from St. Petersburg, Florida and ending in
Camden, Maine.
As part of our
continuing effort to promote boating to all people, disabled and
able-bodied, Nissan Marine has donated a 3.5hp to Alder for use
on her sailboat. Our entire organization is proud to be able to
help support Alder and SAlt in her efforts. Alder is one of the
most courageous people we have had the pleasure to be associated
with and we hope that everyone will take time to stop by SAlt’s
website and provide whatever support they can to this
outstanding organization.

I love my Nissan
3.5. At ¾ throttle it pushes the boat along at hull speed.
Yesterday I came up the intercoastal waterway from Miami to Ft.
Lauderdale. The wind was on the nose & the current against me.
Then there were the boat wakes to contend with. That little
engine never let me down, and I arrived safely in Ft.
Lauderdale. I have used that engine to get me out of a lot of
tight situations and into some beautiful ones in the Everglades.
Thanks to Nissan for all the support.
